New Vendor: Leftcoast Grassfed! Know Your Beef

At Leftcoast™ Grassfed, we feel allowing our cattle to free forage on the natural grasses is the best way to take care of our land and a more humane way to take care of our animals. With a healthier animal, we can offer a healthier cut of meat.
Research shows that grass-fed beef are leaner and more nutritious and that beef from grass-fed animals have higher levels of Omega-3 fatty acids. And that’s important because Omega-3 fatty acids are known to help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, reduce symptoms of hypertension, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), joint pain, and numerous other benefits. Grass-fed beef also has more conjugated linoleic acid (cancer-fighting properties), vitamins A and E, and lower levels of dietary cholesterol.

Research also shows grassfed beef to be lower in fat and cholesterol and less likely to contain harmful E. coli bacteria.
And by rotating our cattle periodically, we not only provide the best forage Mother Nature provides, but we are helping to limit our carbon footprint on the environment.
We choose to produce and sell our grass-fed beef as a locally-grown product to sustain both our ranch and our local community.

LEFTCOAST GRASSFED - We raise certified Food Alliance, American Grassfed, and Animal Welfare Approved cattle for quality grass-fed beef in the San Francisco Bay area. You can follow our tweets at http://www.twitter.com/lcgrassfed or add us at http://www.facebook.com/leftcoast.grassfed

Organic Farming

One of the most important things to consider is just because a vendor does not have a certified Organic license issued they still might use organic practices. The hardest part of becoming a qualified organic vendor sometimes is the process that many do not go through.  While there’s no formal or universal definition for organic farming, it can be defined as one or more systems of production which don’t use synthetic fertilizers, man-made pesticides, herbicides, growth regulators, antibiotics, hormone stimulants and/or livestock feed additives to grow crops and raise animals. Organic farmers that raise livestock and animals are deemed not to use hormones, antibiotics, or food that uses synthetic fertilizers. Farmers that uses practice these technique uses the environments own ecosystems to their advantage, by recycling, reusing, and renewing life. The return what would be waste into their ecosystems causing little carbon footprints. Although we believe Organic Farming a great way to produce goods we do not believe in no way it is the only way. We believe in all types of farming to promote health and protect the end consumer.

How to sell at a certified farmers market: Agriculture and Non- Agriculture

Oh the season has begun for farmers, producers, and food enthusiasts around California. For what you might ask? Farmers Markets! We are excited to launch our farmers market April 22 2012 on Sundays from 10-4 at Harbor Village in Half Moon Bay. We want to invite everyone out. Most people know how to find farmers markets, but most people do not how to get certified to sell at one. We want to lay out a quick guide on getting approved to sell in California. You have to be approved to sell at the market by the governing association before market managers can accept you.

Some things you will need and need to know
• The need for certification as a producer (if you wish to sell at a certified farmers' market)
• the need to meet labeling requirements -- particularly if selling prepackaged or closed container products, or selling for commercial resale
• The need for a health department permit if selling non-agricultural food products
• Specifications as to "organic" labeling.

If you are interested in becoming a Certified Producer, please contact the county office in which the market is located or in which you wish to sell your commodity.
Apply online: http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/egov/farmersmarket/
http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/is/apply_register.html

For San Mateo County producers certificate contact:
Erin Herbst. Biologist/Standards Specialist. San Mateo County Dept. of Agriculture/Weights & Measures. (650) 363-4700. eherbst@smcgov.org
1220 N Street, Sacramento, CA 95814 • (916) 900-5030 FAX (916) 900-5347 • email: cfm@cdfa.ca.gov

For Non- agriculture products:
All most go through county of the governing health department. If you are a producer you do not need to go through department of health, and vise versa. Department of health is only for non-agriculture goods.
For all non-agriculture items our governing body is San Mateo County Health Department.
Contact: Aniie Nantz Contact 650-372-6288. http://www.smchealth.org/

After you have all this, typically, the Market Manager decides who gets to sell at that market. Selection criteria vary by market or group of markets. Once you have compliance from these levels you will have access to start selling at all farmers markets in California. We hope this has helped you in becoming a vendor.

Pest Control Techniques- Chemical and Organic

Pest Control Techniques -Chemical and Organic

There are many different techniques for pest control on farms and gardens that you can use and we want to share a few with you. The first way is with chemical controls that you can apply, which can reduce the pest population very fast. The problem with this is that in the long-run it causes an increase in pests because the repeated use of chemical products creates immunities and resistant’s of organisms you are try to get rid of.
In contrast to chemical horticulture, organic horticulture is a much better long term solution, but requires understanding of many scientific factors, and pest life cycle sequences. Organically farming techniques proves to be much harder, but does create beneficial externalities for consumers, and the environment. Some of these net effects are soil protection, better fertilization, pollination, water conservation and season extension. These benefits are both complementary and cumulative in overall effect on site health. These are some techniques that you must consider and that could help you with your garden or farm.
-Allow for a level of pest damage to what you are growing.

-Planting and encouraging beneficial insects to flourish and eat other pests

-Encouraging beneficial microorganisms

-Choosing disease-resistant varieties

-Planting companion crops
-Using row covers to protect crop plants during pest migration periods

-Rotating crops to different locations to throw off pest reproduction cycles

-Using traps to control pest populations

Why a "Farmers Market"

Why a Farmers Market?
If you look around, most of you can see the ever increasing popularity of Farmers Markets popping up all over. The reason why they are growing so quickly is that these markets provide a vital link between consumers and farmers, while also functioning as a great community center. American Consumer trends are showing an ever-increasing demand for fresh, healthy, locally grown food, and you cannot get any fresher than a Farmers Market. Farmers Markets are good for consumers in many ways. First of all the consumer is getting a great deal on local, fresh, and healthy products. Second consumers are getting to interactive with the vendors themselves getting educated on how the food is grown, or a variety of different things. These markets have grown throughout the years with music, face painting, arts, crafts , and other novelties, but the one fact has remained this is a great place to buy quality products. We are proud to be launching are Farmers Market on April 22, 2012 every Sunday from 10-3 at Harbor Village, Half Moon Bay, Ca. Come check it out and join the fun!
